Sip wine from the oldest cultivated grapevine in America

The Mothervine has been producing muscadine grapes — scuppernongs, to be exact — on what is now Roanoke Island since explorers first sighted it in 1584. In the following centuries, settlers planted cuttings from the vine to produce what are now more than 20 varieties that make both red and white wines. The 2-foot-thick trunk of the original vine winds along wooden arbors that cover almost an acre of land. In 2008, Duplin Winery produced the first bottles of Mothervine Muscadine Wine with grapes from The Mothervine. Immerse yourself in the sweet fruit with a visit to Duplin Winery to tour the state-of-the-art production facility and sample more than a dozen wines.
