Get weird with the Cameron Crazies

When it comes to Duke Men’s Basketball, opinions are split between total devotion and outright hatred. But one thing on which all college hoops fans can agree is the insane environment at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, the crown jewel of classic college basketball venues. Durham is located in the heart of Tobacco Road, the triangle of towns that includes Chapel Hill, home of the basketball powerhouse Carolina Tar Heels, and Raleigh, den of the N.C. State Wolfpack. Conceived on the back of a matchbook cover in 1935 and renovated in the late 1980s, Cameron is known for its diehard fans, the Cameron Crazies. The Crazies create a raucous atmosphere with pointed taunts, cheers and outright noise that has been recorded as high as 121.3 decibels — about as loud as a thunderclap. Adjacent to Cameron’s gothic halls is the must-see Duke Basketball Museum & Hall of Fame. Cameron was ranked on Sports Illustrated’s list of the world’s top 20 sporting venues, and USA Today has called it “the toughest road game in the nation.”
