Chow down at a traditional herring shack in Jamesville

From January through April the Cypress Grill serves up fried fare from a quaint spot on the Roanoke River in the coastal town of Jamesville. The grill, which has been featured in Smithsonian and Southern Living magazines, serves herring, cod and other seafood dishes made from scratch. Commercial fishing was once a big part of the culture along North Carolina’s rivers. The Cypress Grill is the last of the old-time herring shacks on the river. Though it doesn’t look much like a typical restaurant, visitors can’t pass up the authentic atmosphere and crispy herring meal. Complete the experience by visiting during the annual NC Herring Festival in March.
