Visit the oldest Town Common in the South
The gateway to the eastern town of Tarboro’s 45-block Historic District is a 15-acre park filled with tall oaks and war memorials. It’s the only remaining original common on the East Coast outside of Boston. Originally, you would find grazing livestock, community gatherings and military drills in the area that surrounded the town, but it has remained a large, natural open space that enhances the small town’s historic, Old South character. Within walking distance, you can tour restored homes, discover a bed and breakfast with a wine bar, find two historic churches and immerse yourself in historic Blount-Bridgers House museum and art gallery built c.1808.
